Brett Wethmar

Brett graduated from University of the Witwatersrand with a Bachelor of Economic Science with Honours in 1998. He has completed examinations with the Institute of Actuaries, UK, and qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries (FIA) in August 2007. He is also a Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa (FASSA), since September 2007.

He began fulltime employment with Alexander Forbes Financial Services in January 1999 in the Actuarial Department, focusing on employee benefits, amongst others. In pursuit of wider actuarial experience Brett moved to Deloitte & Touche Actuaries and Consultants in March 2002 as Actuarial Manager. During his time with DTAC he was seconded to Mauritius where he worked at Albatross Insurance Company for 2 months, assisting them with various employee benefit accounting matters and insurance consulting.

In June 2003, Deloitte & Touche Actuaries and Consultants merged with Fifth Quadrant Actuaries & Consultants. Fifth Quadrant (now Towers Watson) also offers employee benefit related services, as well as investment consulting services.

In September 2003 Brett moved to SRS as Actuarial Consultant to promote and develop actuarial services in the short-term insurance industry, including the management of (captive) insurance companies. Over the last number of years, Brett has helped SRS deliver actuarial services to clients, including stochastic claims analysis; statutory capital management; insurance reserving (Statutory and IFRS) and business forecasting.

With the recent proposed implementation of Solvency Assessment & Management (“SAM”) in January 2016, the new capital regime of the Financial Services Board, Brett will also be assisting clients in developing internal capital models for management reporting purposes, and ensuring compliance with reporting requirements of the FSB.
